Dilution Ratio Calculator

A 1:20 dilution is one part product to twenty parts water: 21 parts in total. That's why a 1 litre bottle takes 48 ml of product, not 50 ml. Getting this wrong makes every bottle a little stronger, and more expensive, than you meant it to be.

Get the maths right

1:10 is 11 parts. Not 10.

The single most common mistake in dilution, and the one that quietly costs the most.

What the numbers mean

A ratio of 1:10 means 1 part product to 10 parts water: not 10 parts total. Add them together and you get 11 parts. So a 1 litre bottle at 1:10 takes 1000 ÷ 11 = 91 ml of product, topped up with 909 ml of water, not 100 ml of product, which is what "1 part in 10" sounds like it should mean if you don't stop to think about it.

Why it catches people out

It's an easy mistake to make once and never notice: a bottle mixed at 100ml instead of 91ml is only 10% stronger than intended, not enough to look obviously wrong, but enough to burn through a bottle of concentrate roughly 10% faster, every single time you mix one. Across a year of snow foam and APC, that adds up to real money.

Cost

Mixing stronger than the label says doesn't clean any better past a point; it just empties the bottle faster. A concentrate mixed 10% over-strength is a concentrate that costs 10% more per wash, for nothing.

Safety

Trim, plastics, fabric and paint all have a strength a product stops being safe on. Too strong isn't "extra clean": it's the ratio that etches a wheel or strips a protective coating you didn't know was there.

Consistency

A measured ratio gives the same bottle every time: same foam, same working time, same result. Eyeballing it gives you a different bottle every time, and a customer who notices the difference.

Performance

Foam cannons, snow foam lances and pre-wash sprayers are all tuned to a strength range: go outside it and you get thin foam that slides straight off, or thick foam that won't rinse cleanly.

Common mistakes

What actually goes wrong

Reading the ratio backwards. 1:10 is one part product: mixing it as ten parts product to one part water is the same numbers, the opposite bottle.

Eyeballing it. A "glug" varies by bottle, by person, and by how rushed you are. Measure it once properly and you'll never need to guess again.

Ignoring the bottle size. A ratio on its own isn't a recipe: 1:10 means something different in a 500ml trigger than a 5 litre pressure sprayer.

Assuming everything needs diluting. Some products (many tyre dressings, some tar removers) are ready-to-use. Diluting a neat product doesn't stretch it further, it just makes it not work.

How is the calculation actually done?

Product = total volume ÷ (ratio + 1). Water is whatever's left. For 1L at 1:10, that's 1000 ÷ 11 = 91 ml of product and 909 ml of water: the +1 is there because the ratio describes product-to-water, not product-to-total.

Why isn't 1:10 just 100ml in a litre?

Because "1:10" means 1 part product to 10 parts water: 11 parts altogether, not 10. 100ml would be correct for a 1:9 ratio. It's a genuinely common mix-up, covered in detail above.

Does water temperature matter?

For most detailing chemicals, no: cold water works fine and is what most labels assume. A few products (some heavier degreasers) perform better warm; check the label if you're not seeing the result you expect.

My product's label doesn't give a ratio: what do I do?

Some products are genuinely ready-to-use and shouldn't be diluted at all: check for "ready to use" or "RTU" wording first. If it's clearly a concentrate with no ratio given, start weak (1:20) and work stronger only if it isn't performing, rather than the other way round.

Can I mix different chemicals together in one bottle?

Not as a general rule: different formulations can react with each other in ways that aren't obvious from the bottle, and it's genuinely not worth the risk to your skin, your equipment or the paintwork. Mix one product per bottle, and check the manufacturer's own guidance before ever combining two.
